If you’ve been reading my blogs…the few there are…you’ll know I lost my job at the beginning of the year. I have not found another job as of yet, but had an interview and I’m waiting to hear back. I do hope I get the job, but in the meantime, I am now a student. I just finished my first course and am now starting the second.

I had the bright idea to go back to school at the age of 41 to pursue a BA in Psychology. So far I’ve not taken anything “fun”…just the basics. The basics are just as important but I have to admit I got a little bored during the first course.

I chose Psychology for obvious reasons if you’ve been reading my blogs. If you haven’t kept up, I fight mental health disorders and wanted to get the education to help others. The question we were asked in the first course was what do we plan on making our focus of our chosen career and it didn’t take much thought for me to know where my heart lies.

I plan to focus on suicide prevention and mental health awareness. These two subjects are near and dear to my heart. Having been someone who has contemplated suicide, I understand the emotion that goes with that mindset. I want to help others get past those moments.

Mental health awareness has its own month and is own color and even though those are awesome attention getters, I want to work on getting the message out that mental illness is real and unless you’ve experienced it, you know nothing about it. I still have many things to learn, but I’d love for you to follow me on my journey.

Follow my blog and let’s see what the future holds.

  1. I am so sorry to hear about your nephew. It is a tragedy and all too common. Depression and anxiety are hard to deal with and hard to understand (or believe) if it’s never been experienced. I don’t wish it on anyone, but there have been times that I wished someone could take a walk in my shoes. It gives a whole new meaning to “hell and back”.
Thank you for your comment! You and your family are in my thoughts.

  2. Hi Terri. I admire your focuses on suicide prevention and mental health awareness. Though I write about all kinds of things on my blog (which I think is good to do), I of course write about my bipolar disorder and other strange past brain quirks. As a person with bipolar disorder I understand depression, and anxiety is also a frequent part of the illness, too, at times.

I hope you enjoy your psychology studies. I know that introductory courses are not so very fun, but beyond that it can get interesting. I enjoyed Abnormal Psychology and Developmental Psychology. I didn’t major in that at university (when I was a youngster0, but took them in my 40s after the worst of my illness struck.

My family is devastated that my youngest nephew committed suicide about 2.5 weeks ago. He had been in the hospital for suicidal intentions about three weeks prior, but presented himself as doing much better. Unfortunately, people who are suicidal sometimes do that. It is ironic that I wrote a post about quotes to hopefully prevent suicide just two weeks before he died. Then I was writing posts about the sadness and shock of losing a loved one to that horrible act.
